Peanuts from Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil: the South American origins we follow closely

Tango Crops has its own team on the ground in Argentina, Paraguay and China; Brazil we follow from public and trade data, because no reading of the world peanut market is complete without it. South America is one of the most important peanut-exporting regions in the world: Argentina leads global trade in kernels, Brazil is coming off record harvests, and Paraguay is growing as a complementary origin from the Chaco. All three harvest in the austral autumn, counter-seasonal to the northern hemisphere, and sell most of their output abroad. For a buyer that means different options in quality, size and shipment window that are worth understanding before negotiating. Here we summarize the essentials of each country using public sources, cited below. The numbers change every season; the judgment to read them from the ground is what we bring.

01

Argentina

The world's leading peanut exporter and a reference supplier for Europe.

  • Production is concentrated in the south of Córdoba province, which holds about 70% of planted area (over 374,000 ha in 2024/25); because of rotation limits, the crop is expanding into northern Buenos Aires, southern Santa Fe, and San Luis. (BCR, Aug 2025; USDA FAS, Apr 2025)
  • Spring planting (in Córdoba the recommended window is the first half of November) and an austral-autumn harvest: the marketing year USDA uses for Argentine peanuts starts in March, and the 2024/25 harvest wrapped up towards late August 2025 after delays caused by excess moisture. (Bolsa de Cereales de Córdoba; USDA FAS, Oct 2024; BCR, Aug 2025)
  • 2024/25 season: around 532,991 ha planted and production estimated at 1.81 million tons, an all-time record. Between January and July 2025, 462,884 t of the peanut complex were exported. (BCR, Aug 2025)
  • Export profile: the vast majority ships shelled and blanched, with the European Union as the main destination and the Netherlands as the gateway, taking over 40% of shipments according to USDA. (USDA FAS, Apr 2025; USDA FAS, Oct 2024)
02

Brazil

The fastest-growing origin of the past decade, centred on São Paulo.

  • More than 90% of Brazilian peanuts are grown in the state of São Paulo, in rotation with sugarcane; there is also production in Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Bahia, and other states. (USDA FAS, Mar 2024)
  • Planting and harvest happen mostly in the 'first crop', which runs from October to March/April and accounts for over 97% of the area; the second crop is marginal. (USDA FAS, Mar 2024)
  • The 2024/25 harvest was a record: CONAB estimated it at around 1.17 million tons, roughly 60% more than the previous season, after a decade of area expansion. (CZ App / CONAB, May 2025)
  • In 2025 Brazil exported more than 311,000 t of shelled peanuts (+37% versus 2024), with Russia, China, and Algeria as the main destinations; São Paulo municipalities (Tupã, Dumont, Borborema) lead shipments and the state sits close to industry and ports. (Campo & Negócios / IEA, Feb 2026; USDA FAS, Mar 2024)
03

Paraguay

A smaller, growing origin centred on the Chaco.

  • Production is concentrated in the Chaco (Boquerón and Presidente Hayes) and, to a lesser extent, in San Pedro, Caaguazú, Itapúa, Paraguarí, and Caazapá; much of the confectionery peanut business grew out of the cooperatives of the central Chaco. (Revista FOCO, Aug 2026; Valor Agro, 2016)
  • Recommended planting window from September to November and harvest between January and April, according to the local crop calendar; in cooler areas planting may shift to December or January. (Agrotec, Mar 2026)
  • 2025 season: around 22,000 ha cultivated, close to 45,000 t produced, and exports of roughly USD 50 million, according to the Paraguayan Chamber of Peanut Producers and Exporters (CAPPEM). (Revista FOCO, Aug 2026)
  • Russia, the Netherlands, and Ecuador are among the main destinations; being landlocked, Paraguayan cargo travels down the Paraguay–Paraná waterway to ports in Argentina and Uruguay for transshipment onto ocean vessels. (Revista FOCO, Aug 2026; BCR, Dec 2022)
